The opening towards the Outside explains the
display from the first room, entitled 'The Act of
Expanding'. A map of the world, bordered by a
gallery of portraits representing the donors, as
well as some of the Romanian travellers, who
were acquainted with remote locations and
objects symbolizing the idea of travel (coins,
walking sticks, a Congolese carved chest
which can be used for transporting luggage,
exotic furniture perfectly adaptable to the
European habitation etc.) illustrate the desire
of knowing the world and surpassing the
boundaries of ethnocentrism.
